Screenplay
I've known Sujata since my school days, devouring countless tales he's penned over the years. Many captivated me, particularly his shorter pieces. We collaborated on four films together, 'Roja', 'Thirudan Thirudan', 'Dil Se', and 'Amrit', and what struck me most was his instinctive grasp of directorial vision. Working alongside him proved genuinely rewarding. Yet one quality perpetually astounded me: his capacity to write credibly about virtually anything. Knowledge alone doesn't suffice. Understanding something and articulating it clearly are vastly different from rendering those ideas onto a page with elegance and precision. That demands rigorous thinking paired with an ability to grip the reader's imagination. This volume on screenwriting stunned me. His clarity in breaking down structure, in illuminating the fundamental principles, felt revelatory. Why didn't he write this when I was making my debut film? For Indian cinema and Indian screenplays, which have lacked such guidance for decades, this book represents a watershed moment, a bold stride forward addressing a genuine void in our film industry.
