Fuel for Thought: Tintin Tackles the Middle East

Land Of Black Gold

Land Of Black Gold

Few characters in children's comics have endured quite like Tintin. Hergé's plucky reporter has captivated readers for generations, and these handsome collected editions of all 24 original stories are well worth having on your shelf, whether you're a lifelong fan or coming to them fresh. They suit anyone who enjoys graphic novels, mystery, or historically rooted adventure. In this particular outing, something sinister is happening to the petrol supply. Vehicles are spontaneously exploding across the country, and nobody can work out why. Tintin, never one to leave a mystery alone, follows the trail to the Middle East, only to come face to face with a very unwelcome figure from his past lurking among the sand dunes. It's a cracking setup, with genuine tension woven through the sun-baked scenery. Georges Remi, writing and drawing as Hergé, was born in Brussels in 1907 and spent over five decades building this series into something genuinely special. The stories hold up remarkably well for readers aged 8 and above. If you haven't yet worked your way through the full run, from Tintin in the Soviets all the way to the unfinished Alph-Art, this is a fine place to pick up the habit.
