Asterix Album 40: Asterix & the White Iris
The fortieth Asterix album arrives with all the warmth and wit you'd hope for, this time courtesy of writer Fabcaro, who sends our favourite Gaulish duo up against a peculiar new threat. A mysterious philosophy, championed by the silver-tongued Isivertuus, is sweeping through the Roman ranks. It's charming, it's oddly compelling, and when it starts to take hold among the villagers, the results are quietly alarming. Everything the Gauls hold close begins to slip. Asterix and Obelix, naturally, can't let that stand. The two set off to confront Isivertuus directly, with their usual combination of courage, comic banter, and the indispensable magic potion keeping things lively. At stake is the Chief's wife, caught under the spell of the White Iris. Can the pair shake her free of it? Fabcaro brings a dry, knowing humour to the story that sits comfortably alongside the classic Goscinny tradition. The satire feels pointed without being heavy-handed, and the physical comedy lands as reliably as ever. It won't rewrite what you think about the series, but it's a genuinely enjoyable entry that reminds you why these characters have endured for so long. Good fun for longtime fans and a fine starting point for newcomers, too.
