His and Hers
Soon to be a major TV series with Jessica Chastain on board as executive producer, Alice Feeney's His and Hers arrives with serious pedigree and earns every bit of it. When a woman is found murdered in the quiet village of Blackdown, TV newsreader Anna Andrews finds herself uncomfortably close to the story. Her ex-husband, DCI Jack Harper, shares her unease, though for very different reasons. He suspects Anna knows more than she's letting on. Then, without warning, Jack finds himself at the centre of his own murder inquiry. Things get complicated fast. The dual narrative is where Feeney really shows her hand. Jack describes Anna as beautiful, ambitious, and unforgiving. Anna, for her part, needs just one word for Jack: liar. Both perspectives feel entirely convincing, which is precisely what makes the whole thing so unsettling. You'll find yourself switching allegiances chapter by chapter, second-guessing people you'd already decided to trust. Feeney writes with real economy and precision. The plotting is tight, the pacing rarely lets up, and the atmosphere carries a quiet dread that builds steadily rather than relying on cheap shocks. It's the kind of novel that makes you wary of putting it down, partly because you suspect the answer is closer than you think, and partly because you're not entirely sure you want to find it. Psychological thriller readers will find this one genuinely hard to shake.
